altyn

Estimated CEFR level: C2 — Proficiency

Etymology

Borrowed from Russian алты́н (altýn), either from Tatar алты (altı, “six”), referring to six dengas (six half-kopeks), or from Tatar алтын (altın, “gold”). These small coins were never minted in gold; however, compare the semantic evolution of Latin solidus from a Roman gold coin to a medieval silver shilling.
