Terms of Service

Last updated: June 1, 2026

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of Verbault, a literary dictionary and reading tool operated from the Republic of Korea ("Verbault", "we", "our", or "us") at verbault.com (the "Service"). By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1. The Service

Verbault provides a word-lookup dictionary, a full-text reader with inline definitions, translation and text-to-speech features, sentence and book search across a public-domain corpus, personal vocabulary lists and bookmarks, and printable vocabulary worksheets. We may add, change, or remove features over time.

2. Accounts and Eligibility

Some features require an account created through Google Sign-In. You are responsible for activity that occurs under your account. The Service is not directed at children under 13, and you must be at least 13 years old to create an account. You agree to provide accurate information and to keep your account secure.

3. Acceptable Use

You agree not to: (a) use the Service for any unlawful purpose; (b) attempt to disrupt, overload, or reverse-engineer the Service or circumvent rate limits or access controls; (c) scrape or bulk-download content except as expressly permitted; (d) resell or redistribute the Service without our permission; or (e) upload content you do not have the right to use. We may suspend or terminate accounts that violate these rules.

4. Subscriptions, Billing, and Payments

Verbault offers a free tier and optional paid plans (Pro and Max) as well as one-time translation-credit top-ups, described on our Pricing page. Paid plans are billed on a recurring monthly or annual basis until cancelled.

Payments are processed by Paddle.com Market Limited ("Paddle") as our Merchant of Record and authorized reseller. When you purchase a subscription or credit pack, Paddle handles the transaction, payment method, applicable sales tax/VAT, and invoicing. Your purchase is also subject to Paddle's Buyer Terms. We do not store your payment card details.

You can cancel a subscription at any time; access continues until the end of the current billing period. Prices may change with notice; changes do not affect the period you have already paid for. Refunds are described in our Refund Policy.

5. Translation Credits

Inline passage translation is metered. Each plan includes a monthly translation allowance; additional one-time credit packs can be purchased. Credits are consumable digital goods used to cover third-party translation costs and have no cash value. Cached translations do not consume credits.

6. Content and Intellectual Property

Reading content is drawn from the Project Gutenberg public-domain corpus and other public-domain or openly licensed sources. Dictionary definitions are provided by the WordNet lexical database (Princeton University) and, where noted, by Wiktionary under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license. These third-party works remain subject to their own licenses. The Verbault software, design, and original written content (such as blog posts) are owned by us. Content you create — vocabulary lists, bookmarks, and comments — remains yours; by posting it you grant us a license to store and display it as needed to operate the Service.

7. Third-Party Services

The Service relies on third parties including Supabase (authentication and database), DeepL (translation), Google AdSense (advertising), and Paddle (payments). Your use of those features is also subject to the relevant third party's terms. See our Privacy Policy for how data is shared.

8. Disclaimers

The Service is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied. Definitions, reading levels, translations, and worksheets are generated automatically and may contain errors; they are provided for educational reference and should not be relied upon as authoritative. We do not warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted or error-free.

9. Limitation of Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Verbault will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, or consequential damages, or for loss of data or profits, arising out of your use of the Service. Our total liability for any claim relating to the Service will not exceed the amount you paid us in the twelve months preceding the claim.

10. Termination

You may stop using the Service and request account deletion at any time (see the Privacy Policy). We may suspend or terminate your access if you violate these Terms or if required to protect the Service or other users. Sections that by their nature should survive termination (such as intellectual property, disclaimers, and limitation of liability) will continue to apply.

11. Changes to These Terms

We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the "Last updated" date above and, where appropriate, by notice within the Service. Continued use after changes take effect constitutes acceptance.

12. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Korea, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Nothing in these Terms limits any mandatory consumer-protection rights you have under the law of your country of residence.
