First attested c. 1600, from Ottoman Turkish چاوش (çavuş, “messenger, herald, licitor, sergeant”). Cognate with Turkish çavuş, Old Turkic 𐰲𐰉𐰾 (čabïš, “army commander”). Doublet of chouse.
