Ultimately from Proto-Turkic *ēlči, from *ēl (“realm, country”) + *-či (profession suffix), via Ottoman Turkish ایلچی (elçi) or Azerbaijani ایلچی (elçi), or via Hindustani एलची (elcī) / ایلْچی (elcī) through Classical Persian ایلْچِی (ēlčī).
