Etymology

From Middle English forthward, forthwardes, from Old English forþweard (“forward, tending forward, continual”), from Proto-Germanic *furþą (“forth-”), *warþaz (“turned”), equivalent to forth- + -ward. Cognate with Old Saxon forþwerd, forþwerdes, forþwardes (“forthward”).
