Borrowed from Hebrew חֲגִיגָה (ḥagiga, “celebration, pilgrimage, festival offering”), derived from the root ח־ג־ג (ḥ-g-g, “celebrate, make a pilgrimage”). Cognate to Arabic حَجّ (ḥajj, “pilgrimage”).
