From Middle English uprist, opriste, from Old English *ūprist (“uprising”), from *upp (“up”) + *ristiz (“ascension, rise”); equivalent to up- + Old English rist (“a rising”). Compare Old English ǣrist (“rising, rising up, resurrection, awakening”), Old High German urrist (“resurrection”), Gothic 𐌿𐍂𐍂𐌹𐍃𐍄𐍃 (urrists, “resurrection”).
