Borrowed from Hindi ज़िला (zilā) and Urdu ضلع (zilā), from Classical Persian ضلع (zil', “side, edge”), from Arabic ضِلْع (ḍilʕ, “side, edge, division”). Cognate with Nepali जिल्ला (jillā) and Marathi जिल्हा (jilhā).
